BLACKPINK, the most successful female K-pop group of the moment released the KILL THIS LOVE EP yesterday. Read the first listen review below
KILL THIS LOVE is an end to end banger, mostly. From the starting horns on the titular track, music goes back in time a world where Ariana Grande still wrote with proper capitalization on tracks with Iggy Azalea (RIP), meaning where anthemic hooky and powerhouse vocals remained supreme. “Don’t Know What to Do” and “Kick It” follow suit the two covering topics of moving on post-breakup and telling the next in line to step up if they want it, though kick it does have some sick gang vocals that Offset should be nervous about.
This all changes though, on “Hope Not,” which starts with an acoustic guitar, clearing the mist away from the very heavy bass drops with affecting the guitar with a 12-string harmony effect, staking the song in its intention. The song is mostly Korean, and in it BLACKPINK talk about being in a toxic relationship. The song is beautiful, even through to the still anthemic ending. The song is sure to be a palette cleanser and festival favorite when they perform at Coachella this year.
The other crowd favorite, assuredly, will be “DDU-DU-DDU-DU (Remix)”, which somehow goes to half-time like four times consecutively, though the rhythm pattern is basic, it’s pure pop ear candy, as is the rest of this album. BLACKPINK are doing it right so far, and with Coachella looming overhead, KILL THIS LOVE is promising.
